The Complete Used Car Test Drive and Inspection Checklist

A test drive is your best chance to learn how a used car really feels, sounds and performs. Photos and descriptions help you shortlist vehicles, but nothing replaces seeing and driving the car yourself. This checklist from Bancroft Auto Sales in San Diego walks you through what to inspect before, during and after your test drive so you can buy with confidence.
Before You Go: Prepare for the Test Drive
Confirm availability. Contact the dealer to make sure the vehicle is still available and to schedule a time.
Bring your driver’s license and proof of insurance. Dealers typically need these before a test drive.
Review the listing and history. Note the mileage, features and anything in the vehicle history report you want to ask about.
Plan enough time. A rushed test drive is how problems get missed. Allow at least 30 minutes for the inspection and drive.
Bring a helper. A second person can check lights, listen for noises and notice things you miss.
Visit in daylight. Paint defects, dents and fluid leaks are easier to see in natural light.
Exterior Inspection Checklist
Walk around the car and look along each side for dents, scratches and ripples that could indicate prior repairs.
Check that the paint color and finish match on all panels. Mismatched panels can suggest bodywork.
Look at the gaps between panels, doors, hood and trunk. They should be even.
Inspect the windshield and windows for chips and cracks.
Check all lights, including headlights, high beams, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights and fog lights.
Look underneath for fresh fluid drips or heavy rust.
Open and close every door, the hood, the trunk or tailgate and the fuel door.
Tires and Wheels
Check tread depth. A simple coin test can give a quick idea of remaining tread.
Look for uneven wear across the tire. Wear on only the inner or outer edge may point to alignment or suspension issues.
Make sure all four tires are a matching brand and size, if possible.
Check wheels for curb damage, cracks or bends.
Look for the spare tire and jack, or a tire repair kit.
Under the Hood
You do not need to be a mechanic to spot warning signs. With the engine off and cool:
Check the oil level and color on the dipstick. Very dark, gritty or milky oil deserves a question.
Look at the coolant reservoir level and color.
Look for leaks, cracked hoses, frayed belts and corrosion on the battery terminals.
Notice whether the engine bay is excessively dirty or suspiciously freshly cleaned. Either can be worth asking about.
Interior Checklist
Sit in every seat. Check for tears, stains, broken seat adjustments and seat belt function.
Smell the cabin. Musty or damp odors may point to water leaks or flood damage. Strong air fresheners may be covering something.
Lift floor mats and check carpets for dampness.
Test the air conditioning and heater at every fan speed. Strong A/C matters in San Diego’s inland summer heat.
Test power windows, locks, mirrors, seats and the sunroof.
Check the infotainment system, Bluetooth pairing, USB ports, speakers and backup camera.
Turn the key to on and confirm that dashboard warning lights illuminate briefly and then go off after the engine starts.
Check the odometer reading matches the listing and paperwork.
During the Test Drive
Starting and Idling
Start the engine and listen. It should start easily and idle smoothly without shaking, knocking or unusual noises. Watch for smoke from the exhaust.
Acceleration and Transmission
Accelerate gently and firmly. Shifts should be smooth without slipping, hesitation or clunks. On a manual transmission, the clutch should engage smoothly.
Braking
Brakes should feel firm and stop the car in a straight line. Listen for squealing or grinding and feel for pulsing through the pedal.
Steering and Suspension
The car should track straight on a level road without pulling. Drive over some uneven pavement and listen for clunks or rattles. Steering should feel responsive without excessive play.
Highway Driving
If possible, drive on a freeway. Check for vibrations at higher speeds, wind noise, and how the car merges and passes. Test cruise control and any driver-assistance features.
Parking and Low-Speed Maneuvers
Turn the wheel fully in both directions at low speed and listen for noises. Try parking and reversing to test visibility and the backup camera or sensors.
After the Test Drive
Look under the car again for new drips.
Check that no new warning lights appeared on the dashboard.
Write down your impressions while they are fresh, especially if you are comparing several cars.
Ask about service records, the number of previous owners and any reconditioning work performed.
Red Flags That Deserve a Closer Look
Some findings do not automatically rule out a vehicle, but they deserve clear answers before you buy:
A check engine light, airbag light or ABS light that stays on after starting.
Signs of water damage, such as rust under the seats, silt in the trunk or fogged headlights.
Mileage on the odometer that does not match the history report or service records.
Blue or white smoke from the exhaust after the engine is warm.
A burning smell, grinding noises or a transmission that slips.
If you notice any of these, ask questions and consider a professional inspection before moving forward.
Consider a Pre-Purchase Inspection
For extra peace of mind, many buyers arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic. A professional can put the car on a lift and check areas you cannot easily see, such as the underside, suspension and brakes. Ask the dealer how an inspection can be arranged.
